Yesod.

Foundation.

In the Qabalah, Yesod is the ninth of the ten Sephiroth on the 'Tree of Life'.

In Hebrew, Yesod means 'Foundation', and that is what Yesod is: it is the hidden infrastructure whereby the emanations from the remainder of the Tree are transmitted to the sephira Malkuth.

Many Yesod correspondences reinforce this notion of a foundation, of something which lies behind, supports and gives shape to phenomenal reality.

The magical image of Yesod is of 'a beautiful naked man, very strong'. The image which springs to mind is that of a man with the world resting on his shoulders, like one of the misrepresentations of the Titan Atlas (who actually held up the heavens, not the world).

Emanations Purified.

In the words of the Yetziratic Text, which says of the Ninth Path that it:

'Purifies the Emanations. It proves and corrects the designing of their representations, and disposes of the unity with which they are designed without diminution or division'.

This concept is further illuminated by the nature of the Spiritual Experience assigned to Yesod, which is described as 'the Vision of the Machinery of the Universe'.

Yesod & the Spiritual Substance.

'Yesod is the sphere of that peculiar substance, partaking of the nature of both mind and matter, which is called the Ether of the Wise, the Akasha, or the Astral Light, according to the terminology that is being used.

It is not the same as the ether of the physicists, which is the fire element of the Sphere of Malkuth; but is to that ether what that ether is to dense matter;

It is, in fact, the basis of the phenomena which the physicist attributes to his empirical ether.

The Ether of the Wise might, in fact, be called the root of the ether of physics'.

Precondition for Reality's Aspects.

The idea of a foundation suggests that there is a substance which lies behind physical matter and 'in-forms it' or 'holds it together', something less structured, more plastic, more refined and rarified, and this 'fifth element' is often called aethyr, a form of spirit-energy.

Many magicians, who, when asked how magic works, tend to think in terms of a medium which is directly receptive to the will, something which is plastic and can be shaped through concentration and imagination, and which transmits their artificially created forms into reality.

Eliphas Levi called this medium the 'Astral Light'.
